GOV. EVERS SIGNS SPECIAL SESSION SENATE BILL SHIELDING BUSINESSES FROM COVID-19 LAWSUITS

Gov. Tony Evers signed 2021 Special Session Senate Bill 1 into law as 2021 Act 4. This Act contains a liability shield that protect businesses—and other entities—from predatory COVID-19 related lawsuits.

SUMMARY OF PROPOSED 2021-23 STATE BUDGET

Gov. Tony Evers unveiled his 2021-23 budget, a $91 billion two-year spending plan for the state, giving a first glimpse into the governor’s tax, spending and policy priorities for the next two years. The budget represents a nearly 10% increase in total spending, and would leave an estimated deficit of about $1 billion at the end of the 2022-23 fiscal year, according to generally accepted accounting principles. The budget bill will now go the Republican-controlled Legislature, where lawmakers are likely to largely rewrite the proposal. The governor’s budget contains many troubling tax and policy items that would make businesses less competitive, and hamper their efforts to recover from the economic downturn brought on by the pandemic.

BUSINESS BRIEFS

Oshkosh Defense, LLC, recently announced that the company produced their 10,000th Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV). To date, Oshkosh Defense has received orders for 18,126 JLTVs for a total contract value over $6 Billion. Over 6,500 of those vehicles have been fielded with Warfighters around the globe, including over 30 U.S. and international military installations.

The United States Postal Service has chosen Oshkosh Defense to build its Next Generation Delivery Vehicle (NGDV). Over the next 10 years, Oshkosh Defense will manufacture both zero emission battery electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel-efficient low-emission internal combustion engine vehicles (ICE), upgrading the USPS fleet to be increasingly sustainable. The USPS has committed to pay $482 million to initiate engineering efforts to finalize the production vehicle design, and for tooling and factory build-out activities.

EDUCATION LANDSCAPE DURING A PANDEMIC

This year, the Leadership Oshkosh Education Day actually spanned two days, including virtual tours of OASD, Lourdes, FVTC and UWO. Honest discussions by LO participants and a leadership panel comprised of the UWO Chancellor, FVTC President and OASD Superintendent discussed leadership and the implications of COVID on our educational landscape. The Director of the Oshkosh Public Library shared how the library continues to support the community’s continuing education needs. Once again, special thank you to Oshkosh Corporation for hosting our program and providing the necessary technology to bring it all together.
