MERGE ANNOUNCES PLANS FOR FOOD CO-OP IN BRIO BUILDING PROJECT
Merge Urban Development announced plans for a new 8,000 square foot Food Co-Op at the corner of Jackson Street and Pearl Avenue. Plans call for the Food Co-op to occupy the entire first floor of a proposed 5-story building called the BRIO Building that would also include 56 market rate residential units with 28 underground and 112 surface parking stalls. The entire building will be 76,258 square feet with a total development cost estimated at $11.9 million. Constructed is anticipated to begin in May, 2020.
The entire development is being branded as Mackson Corners (Marion Road Redevelopment Area) along with the BRIO Building which is part of a 3-phase series of mixed-use and multi-family residential buildings to be constructed over a four year period that will ultimately result in the construction of 270 residential units ranging from furnished micros to luxury townhomes. The series of buildings in aggregate will offer 29,000 gross square feet of commercial space and the neighborhood development includes over 300 on-site parking stalls. The total project cost is projected to be approximately $56 million.
The entire site is located in a federally designated Qualified Opportunity Zone and is part of a newly created $9.8 million TIF District that was approved by the Oshkosh Common Council on June 11. The Oshkosh Chamber worked very closely with representatives of Merge and the City of Oshkosh over the past 18 months as Merge was considering Oshkosh for investment opportunities.

The Department of Labor (DOL) released the final overtime rule update which will be in effect starting January 1, 2020. What does the rule do? According to DOL, the change will make 1.3 million workers eligible for overtime pay, resulting in an additional $298.8 million wages paid to workers. It does that primarily by raising the standard salary level by 50%, from $455 per week, or $23,660 annually, to $684 per week, $35,568 annually.
While that may seem like a steep increase, it is more justifiable than the rule change that the DOL proposed under President Obama, which would have more than doubled the threshold. Consider also that the rule hasn’t been updated since President George W. Bush established the current level back in 2004. The DOL set the new rate by using the same methodology used in 2004, setting the salary level to the 20th percentile of earnings for full-time salaried employees from July 2018 to July 2019 in the South Census Region and/or in the retail industry.
The new rule is effective January 1, 2020, bringing to a close a several year legislative debate and court battle on the issue. Employers must now get ready to comply starting January 1, 2020.

6TH ANNUAL INTERVIEWTHONS HELD AT OSHKOSH HIGH SCHOOLS
|
The Fall Interviewthons
For the past six years, the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce has coordinated the Fall Interviewthon held at Oshkosh North and West high schools for juniors interested in finding positions or perfecting their interview skills. This year on November 12th and 14th, 126 interviews with area employers were held with over 15 employers participating. At the end of each interview, students are provided with feedback on their interviewing skills.
The event is the capstone for training done by members of the Oshkosh Society of Human Resource Managers (SHRM) who presented at personal finance classes prior to the Interviewthons. They trained students on resume preparation and interviewing skills. Critically important to the event’s success is the partnership with high school teachers. Amee Kurkoski, the business department chair at Oshkosh North stated, “Feedback from my students was very positive.”
“Successful recruiters have utilized this as their 1st interview and in some cases have hired students on the spot. Employers also participate as they understand the importance of supporting the talent pipeline and preparing students for success as they enter the workforce. When surveyed after the event 100% of the employers that responded stated that it was a positive use of their time,” commented Patti Andresen-Shew, Director of Education and Talent Development with the Oshkosh Chamber.
The Oshkosh Chamber is always looking for opportunities for area students in career exploration and school-to-work experiences. Please contact Patti Andresen-Shew at [email protected] for more information.
